The Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) is a worldwide leader in injury cause and prevention research. Founded in 1985, HIPRC is a multidisciplinary research center supported by the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. HIPRC faculty and staff are devoted to conducting research, education, and community outreach aimed at diminishing the personal impact of trauma and broadening the effectiveness of injury prevention and treatment programs regionally and nationally. HIPRC seeks a Program Operations Specialist to serve as a lead for the HIPRC INSIGHT summer education program for high school students. This is a Temporary (100% FTE) position that is scheduled to go from 6/23/2025 – 8/08/2025. The purpose of this position is the management of the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC) INSIGHT summer program for high school students. This position reports to the HIPRC Program Manager and works closely with the Training & Education Program Specialist and the INSIGHT High School Faculty Lead. The HIPRC administratively sits within the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine in the UW School of Medicine and is a multi-disciplinary specialty center located at Harborview Medical Center Campus. This position will work remote/online.

HIPRC’s Injury Prevention Student Internship Training Program (INSIGHT) is an innovative, interdisciplinary, and intensive summer program for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. The 4-week high school component of INSIGHT introduces students to medical and public health campaign design and delivery. All students participate in remote/online injury research talks and professional development seminars. The program culminates in a presentation at a research symposium at the end of the program. The Program Specialist Lead will support the high school component of the INSIGHT program under the general direction of the HIPRC Program Manager, the Training & Education Program Specialist, who is primarily responsible for the undergraduate/graduate program, and the INSIGHT Faculty Lead for the high school program. They will work closely with the INSIGHT High School Faculty Lead to organize seminars and coordinate peer mentoring between the high school students enrolled in the program. The Program Specialist will oversee, develop, and complete all activities of the high school summer program and will be the primary point of contact for summer high school students throughout the duration of the program.

The individual in this position manages the activities of HIPRC’s 4-week INSIGHT High School Summer Program. The individual in this position must be an expert time manager and comfortable with a range of projects and operational tasks. This position requires the incumbent to have an understanding of public health education principles and experience working with youth in an educational, counseling or other leadership role. The individual in this position must be able to act independently, maturely, and professionally. This individual must quickly gain the trust and respect of the program participants, and must communicate clearly and effectively with program participants, UW faculty and staff.

The major aspects of this position fall into the following categories:

Instruct and supervise high school interns (70%)
Administrative duties related to the INSIGHT program, including oversight of other program staff members (20%)
Serve as liaison to faculty mentors working with the INSIGHT program (10%)

Details of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Instruct and supervise high school interns (70%)

Develop and adapt as needed a practice-based learning curriculum based on the fundamentals of public health communications and outreach.
Lead students through the coursework and curriculum throughout a four-week internship aimed at developing a public health awareness campaign.
Supervise high school student interns and communicate daily to assess research project and curriculum progress, adapting as needed.
Foster a culture of collaboration and shared learning.

Details of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Administrative duties related to the INSIGHT program (20%)

Develop a detailed calendar of program events; disseminate calendar to program participants, faculty mentors, and speakers.
Collaborate with the HIPRC communications team to develop and/or edit visually appealing electronic and print promotional material, publications, and articles (brochures, newsletters, posters, online newsletters) for the student curriculum, activities, and learning objectives, and to publicize the program to the UW community and the community at large.
Assist with the onboarding and orientation of all student interns.
Assist the INSIGHT Training & Education Program Specialist and the INSIGHT High School Faculty Lead with the planning and organization of the final research symposium. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Set priorities, allocate tasks, and collaborate with program staff to meet program targets
Oversee and provide guidance to program staff members and manage day-to-day issues
Ensure overall program coordination and program staff work are assigned as necessary
Drafting the schedule of events
Preparing the symposium program brochure
Designing and sending invitations to mentors and sponsors
Managing logistical details
Advertising for the event, presentations
Work on special projects or additional duties as required by the HIPRC Director.

Details of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Serve as liaison to faculty mentors working with INSIGHT program (10%)

Actively communicate with faculty mentors, staff and outside speakers regarding scheduled seminars and lectures specific to the high school program.
Meet regularly with HIPRC leaders to discuss program curriculum, student progress, research projects, and program status.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare management, business, social science programs, education or other related

Type and Years of Experience: Minimum 1-2 years’ experience managing programs involving student learners; curriculum development; or educational programs OR equivalent education/experience.

Other Required Qualifications

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally in all forms of communications, e.g., verbal, and written, one-on-one and in groups.
Ability to contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment.
Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint in particular).
Excellent organizational skills, ability to move between a variety of tasks quickly and efficiently, and ability to independently prioritize workload.
Attentive to detail.
Flexible schedule to allow working occasional early mornings or late afternoons to assist with program events.
Must be able to quickly gain confidence of summer interns as well as faculty, mentors and sponsoring organizations.

Desirable Qualifications

MPH, MSW or MEd degree earned or in progress, with an understanding of public health research, outreach, and communications.
Experience teaching, supervising and/or counseling high school students or student interns.
Experience with a volunteer program, public health non-profit organization or NGO such as the Peace Corps.
Experience in public health setting desired but not essential.
